Skyscraper cities in China over the last few decades

China. It won’t surprise you if I say that of the ten tallest skyscrapers in the world, as many as 9 are in Asia, and five of those are in China.

What is fascinating, though, is that in recent years China has been completing more than 100 skyscrapers a year.

More than 1,000 skyscrapers were built between 2000 and 2015 alone (Wikipedia).

Skyscraper cities there are growing at breakneck speed: in just a few decades, Shenzhen (China) has gone from a fishing village to a megacity of more than 17 million people.

China also leads the world in hydropower

Right now they are building the largest hydropower plant in the world in Tibet. It will cost around 137 billion dollars, and its capacity should be around 60 GW, three times more than the current largest hydropower plant in the world (which is also in China – photo above).

For me, though, one other Chinese mega hydropower plant is especially important – but more about that in the next post.
