-Vanja Keindl: The Building Site – Burj Khalifa
Today I want to talk about the Burj Khalifa building site in a different context. My relationship with building sites started long before university and my engineering degree.
As a child, my father used to take me to building sites. I remember the smell of fresh formwork boards, the sound of the concrete mixer and the quiet pride in his eyes when he showed me how something lasting is made out of nothing.
Ever since, the people on site have been the most important part of every structure for me. In Dubai, inside the Burj Khalifa itself, there are photographs of the workers who helped build it. I have to admit that made me very happy.
Building sites in my childhood
In every engineering undertaking, on every building site, even the most impressive ones like the Burj Khalifa, people play the key role.

People on the building site (Burj Khalifa)
I watch the people – tiny workers in high-visibility vests, their movements, the rhythm in which material is carried, how the rebar is tied or the bricks are laid.
